Introducing Photobiomodulation

What is Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation refers to the use of low-level red and near-infrared light to stimulate beneficial biological responses at the cellular level. Unlike high-intensity lasers that cut or heat tissue, PBM uses gentle, non-thermal light to activate mitochondrial function, increase energy availability, and promote neurobiological resilience.

At the core of PBM is the enhancement of cytochrome c oxidase activity within mitochondria, which in turn boosts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production—the primary energy source for cellular processes. This uptick in energy supports healing, improves blood flow, reduces oxidative stress, and facilitates more efficient cell signaling within the brain and body.

The Technology

At Mind Matters Regional Neurofeedback Centers, we are pleased to introduce Photobiomodulation (PBM) using the Vielight Gamma, a cutting-edge, non-invasive technology designed to support and optimize brain function. Backed by scientific research and ongoing clinical investigation, this service targets cellular energy production and neurophysiological balance—offering meaningful support for cognitive health and mental performance.

About the Vielight Gamma

The Vielight Gamma is a wearable PBM device specifically engineered to deliver pulsed near-infrared light to key regions of the brain. It combines two modes of delivery:

  • Transcranial light delivery through LEDs positioned on the scalp, targeting cortical regions involved in executive function, attention, and emotional regulation.

  • Intranasal light delivery through a small LED applicator placed in the nasal cavity, designed to access deeper brain structures such as the limbic system and hippocampus.

What sets the Vielight Gamma apart is its 40 Hz pulsing frequency, which aligns with the brain’s natural gamma wave oscillations—a rhythm associated with higher cognitive function, working memory, and mental clarity. By supporting these frequencies, this intervention may help promote healthy brainwave activity and cognitive integration.

How It Works

The Vielight Gamma uses near-infrared light at a wavelength of approximately 810 nanometers, ideal for penetrating the skull and reaching brain tissue. Once absorbed by chromophores in the mitochondria, a series of beneficial cellular events occurs:

  • Increased ATP production, supplying neurons with greater energy.

  • Improved cerebral blood flow, enhancing oxygen and nutrient delivery.

  • Reduction of oxidative stress, promoting a healthier inflammatory profile.

  • Activation of neuroplasticity, allowing the brain to adapt and reorganize more efficiently.

  • Gamma wave entrainment, potentially enhancing synchronization across brain networks.

This multi-faceted approach allows PBM to support a variety of physiological systems that underlie brain performance and recovery.

Who May Benefit

Photobiomodulation with the Vielight Gamma may be appropriate for a wide range of individuals seeking to improve or maintain cognitive and emotional health. This includes:

  • Individuals with mild cognitive changes or early signs of memory decline.
Research indicates PBM may enhance recall, attention, and processing speed by boosting energy metabolism and promoting vascular health in the brain.

  • People recovering from concussion or traumatic brain injury.
PBM may support neural repair by modulating inflammation and accelerating mitochondrial recovery in injured brain regions.

  • Clients experiencing fatigue, poor focus, or mental “fog.”
By increasing mitochondrial efficiency and cerebral perfusion, PBM may improve mental energy and clarity.

  • Those with elevated stress levels, sleep disturbances, or mood instability.
Light-based interventions have demonstrated effects on mood-regulating neurotransmitters and circadian rhythm alignment.

  • Individuals seeking to support long-term brain wellness.
As part of a comprehensive cognitive health strategy, PBM may help optimize executive functioning, emotional resilience, and attention capacity.

Scientific Evidence and Applications

A growing body of peer-reviewed research supports the role of photobiomodulation in enhancing brain function and resilience. Notable findings include:

  • Cognitive Performance: Clinical pilot studies using the Vielight Gamma have reported improvements in memory, attention, and executive function—particularly in older adults and individuals with mild cognitive impairment.

  • Neurodegenerative Support: Gamma-frequency light stimulation has been explored as a potential approach for Alzheimer’s disease. Animal models show reduced amyloid-beta accumulation and increased microglial clearance when exposed to 40 Hz light, and human trials are currently underway.

  • Trauma Recovery: In both military and civilian populations, PBM has been studied for its potential role in addressing persistent post-concussive symptoms, including brain fog, headaches, and mood shifts.

  • Neurovascular Health: By improving endothelial function and promoting vasodilation, PBM can help restore healthy blood flow to compromised brain regions.

  • Safety: The Vielight Gamma has a strong safety profile. Adverse effects are rare and typically mild, such as slight nasal irritation or localized redness. The technology is non-invasive, does not produce heat, and does not interfere with standard neurofeedback protocols.

What to Expect

Photobiomodulation sessions at Mind Matters are brief, simple, and well-tolerated. Each session typically includes:

  1. Placement of the Vielight Gamma headset, aligning the transcranial LEDs with target brain regions.

  2. Insertion of the intranasal light applicator, comfortably secured to deliver light to internal brain-adjacent tissues.

  3. A 20-minute session duration, during which clients may sit quietly and relax.

  4. Ongoing monitoring and integration into a personalized brain health plan.

PBM may be incorporated alongside other services such as neurofeedback, cognitive training, or nutritional support to provide comprehensive care.
